Good luck to the girls' golf team at state!

Day 1 State Golf Results:

The Wayne High Girls golf team teed it up Monday at the Class C NSAA State Golf Tournament at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte. After a one hour frost delay the girls heated up and played some really good golf. Lake Maloney golf course offers tight fairways, DEEP roughs, and super fast layered greens but the girls found their way around the course in good shape. After 1 round of play Wayne is sitting in 4th place shooting a 377 (2nd best round of the year). Wayne was paced today by Joslyn Johnson's 84 today which puts her in a tie for 8th place going into day 2. Charli Sievers played extremely steady today and shot 94 (tied for 29th). Carli Canham found a groove late in her round to shoot 99 (tied 45th). Lindsay Niemann had a scorching 46 on the front to end the day at 100 (tied 48th). Hallie Heithold had the lone birdie for the Blue Devils on her way to a personal best 49 on the front and a 101 for the day (tied 53rd). Wayne will look to continue the steady play on Tuesday.

"The girls played really well on a really challenging course. If you can find the fairways the course softens a bit, but if you stray off too far BIG numbers creep in. We have to keep the big numbers down tomorrow. So proud of how they keep grinding it out." -- Coach Johnson

Congratulations to the Wayne High Blue Devil girls golf team on winning the C3 District in Wayne on Wednesday. Wayne shot a 390 to win by 5 strokes over runner up West Holt for their 2nd straight District title.  The Lady Blue Devils got off to a pretty steady start and some solid play by Joslyn Johnson, Carli Canham and Charli Sievers kept Wayne in the lead through the first 9 holes.  After the front nine Wayne held a 10 stroke lead over the field.  Runner Up West Holt made a push on the back nine but could only get the Blue Devil lead down to 3 strokes with two holes to play.  Wayne would hold on to win 390-395 over West Holt.  Individually, Wayne was led by District Champion Joslyn Johnson.  In a back and forth battle with Katlyn Gaughenbaugh from O'Neill, Johnson needed to make a 6 footer on the 18th hole to force a playoff.  The two would battle down hole 1 (both bogeyed) and then to two, where Johnson would par and seal the individual championship.  Other District Medalists for Wayne were 5th place Carli Canham (95) and 7th place Charli Sievers (97).  Other scorers were Lindsay Niemann and Hallie Heithold.  Wayne will be traveling to North Platte Monday & Tuesday for the Class C State Championships.

"I am ssssooooo proud of these girls. They just go out there and take care of business. I love how they have each other's back. If someone is struggling someone else always seems to rise to the occasion to cover for them. If all 4 scorers could play well on the same day, look out!!!  Obviously I am stoked for our medalists (Joslyn, Carli, and Charli) as they played so steady today, but it was truly a TEAM effort.  We only won this today because every girl fought every shot until the absolute end. It was also nice to see Joslyn Johnson get the individual championship.  She has worked hard all summer and it really paid off."  --- Coach Johnson
