District Music Recap

On Friday, April 25th, over 90 Wayne High Students traveled to South Sioux City to compete in the NSAA District III Music Contest in a variety of ensembles and in solos/small groups.  Large ensembles (band, choirs) perform for three judges, while solos and small groups perform for one judge.  Ratings are given for each performance and time permitting, the judges give comments to the performers to enhance the learning opportunity.  Judges of solos and small groups have the opportunity to select one Outstanding Performance and one Honorable Mention award from the solos/groups they judged.  

 

Wayne High results from Friday's contest include:

 

Large Ensembles:

Concert Band - Superior*

Concert Choir - Superior*

Treble Choir - Superior*

Bass Choir - Superior*

Jazz Choir - Superior*

 

*All large ensembles received Superior Ratings from all three judges.  

 

Vocal Solos and Small Groups:

Superior Ratings - Colby Raulston, Abi Hawthorne, Jordyn Clinchard, Sharon Vasquez, Gavin Anderson, Aidan Bohnert, Olivia Hanson, Norah Armstrong, Ceilus Ibarra, Gabriel Armstrong, Allan Brenner, Taesha Dunklau, Samantha Wright, Ceilus Ibarra and Sharon Vasquez Vocal Duet, Gavin Anderson and Adrienne Anderson Vocal Duet, Norah Armstrong and Olivia Hanson Vocal Duet, Whitney Hadcock and Oliver Surber Vocal Duet, Samantha Wright and Taesha Dunklau Vocal Duet, Barbershop Group (Aidan Bohnert, Colby Raulston, Gavin Anderson, Gabriel Armstrong)

Instrumental Solos and Small Groups:

Superior Ratings:  Aidan Bohnert (Trumpet), Ceilus Ibarra (Flute), Norah Armstrong (Piano), Ceilus Ibarra and Haley Brogren (Flute Duet)

Excellent Ratings: Joselyn Saltzman (Flute), Sharon Vasquez (Flute), Jordan Clinchard and Nyamalo Kantai (Percussion Ensemble), Rachel Holland (Flute), Maddox Ziska (Tuba), Landen Claussen, Taven Ocampo, Dean Young, Cole Zach and Maddox Ziska (Low Brass Quintet)

Good Rating:  Alec Schaffer (Saxophone)

 

Wayne High also brought home a large majority of the Outstanding Performance Awards from the day: Norah Armstrong (Vocal Solo and Piano Solo), Gavin Anderson (Vocal Solo), Colby Raulston (Vocal Solo), Ceilus Ibarra (Flute Solo), Aidan Bohnert (Trumpet Solo) Hon. Mention, Ceilus Ibarra (Vocal solo) Hon. Mention, Olivia Hanson (Vocal Solo) Hon. Mention, Gabriel Armstrong (Vocal Solo) Hon. Mention, Barbershop Quartet Hon. Mention, Taesha Dunklau and Samantha Wright - Vocal Duet Hon. Mention.

 

It was a record-setting day for the WHS Music Department with 39 events and 11 student performances recognized for their outstanding excellence.  The community of Wayne has much to be proud of in the talents and high standards that are held by our student-musicians.  Special thanks to Deneil Parker, Christiana Koeppe and Shelly Armstrong for accompanying the performances throughout the day.  We were also very appreciative of Jilliane Allemann, Russ Plager, Mary Kay Hasemann for their assistance, and thankful for the family and friends who came to support the students. 

 

Please consider joining us for the Final Concert and Parents Night for the high school music department on Tuesday, May 6 at 7:00 PM.  Also mark your calendars for the Fine Arts Awards Night on Thursday, May 15th.  Students will be performing many of their solos and small group selections prior to the awards ceremony slated to tentatively begin at 6:00 PM (more information to come on this event).
