WAYNE HIGH SCHOOL TEAM TIES FOR 5TH IN NEBRASKA SCIENCE BOWL

WAYNE, NEBRASKA (February 28, 2023) – Wayne High School sent two teams of 9th thru 11th grade students to compete in the Nebraska High School Science Bowl held Saturday, February 25th, at Concordia University.  Both Wayne teams did an amazing job competing against mostly class A schools.  Wayne’s Team 2, consisting of two freshmen and two sophomores, tied for fifth place with Lincoln East Team 1.

The daylong competition started at 9am, when teams participated in four preliminary rounds of questions in the categories of biology, chemistry, earth and space, energy, math, and physics, then went on to compete in double elimination rounds.  Each round had two, 8-minute halves.  Wayne Team 2 advanced to the ninth round after winning three straight matches to eventually lose 34-22 to Millard North Team 2, thereby ending the competition in a tie for fifth place out of sixteen teams.  Wayne Team 1 completed six rounds.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, and the winning state team, Creighton Prep Team 1, will advance to the national science bowl competition in Washington, D.C., later this spring.

Representing Wayne High School Team 1 are Gavin Anderson, Mason Ley, Aidan Bohnert, and Johen Piper (not pictured is Andy Wibben).  Representing Wayne High Team 2 are Josie Ley, Reese Rethwisch, Jordyn Clinchard and Nyamalo Kantai.  The teams are coached by Wayne High School science teacher Jeanne Brink and volunteer Sandy Brown.
