DROP EVERYTHING AND READ

When the 3:15 bell rings, Wayne High School students and teachers stop whatever they are doing and spend the last fifteen minutes reading. Research at the Center for the Study of Reading at the Universiy of Illionois shows that students who do a lot of reading on their own become better readers because independent reading:
  • Enhances their reading comprehension
  • Provides them with a wide range of background knowledge
  • Accounts for one-third or more of their vocabulary growth
  • Promotes reading as a lifelong activity.
